Thanksgiving and Christmas Possession 2026: Bellville ISD and Sealy ISD Calendars for Austin County Parents

October is when Austin County parents start sketching Thanksgiving travel and Christmas morning plans. In Bellville, Sealy, and Wallis, those plans only work if they line up with the child’s actual school calendar and the holiday language in the signed order.

Holiday possession in an unmodified Texas Standard Possession Order is not the same as “Thanksgiving week” or “Christmas break.” It is a set of start and end times tied to dismissal, a noon December 28 split, and the day before school resumes. 2026 is an even-numbered year. That parity matters for who has which holiday block under the statutory default.

Many families say they will “just figure it out” in November. Others put the conversation off because they do not want another argument, or because clarifying the order feels like it will cost money they do not want to spend before the holidays. Waiting usually makes the conflict louder, not quieter. Putting the calendar next to the decree in October is quieter work.

Does holiday possession override our regular weekends and Thursdays?

Yes, under the unmodified SPO. Thanksgiving and Christmas (winter vacation) periods typically supersede a conflicting weekend or Thursday, without regard to how far apart the households live.

That is why a first, third, or fifth Friday that falls inside a holiday block does not automatically control the exchange. The holiday language does. The signed order still controls if yours is customized. Many Austin County orders follow the statutory default. Many others do not. Read what you signed.

How does Thanksgiving 2026 work under the unmodified SPO?

Thanksgiving goes to the possessory conservator in odd-numbered years and the managing conservator in even-numbered years. 2026 is even, so the unmodified SPO gives this period to the managing conservator.

The period typically begins at 6:00 p.m. on the day the child is dismissed from school before Thanksgiving and ends at 6:00 p.m. on the following Sunday. “Following Sunday” is the phrase that trips people up on a week-long student break. It can be read as the Sunday right after dismissal or the Sunday after Thanksgiving Day. Attaching the calendar and clarifying the end date before November is how families avoid arguing about it in the school parking lot.

Both Bellville ISD and Sealy ISD have Friday, November 20, 2026, as the last student day before the Thanksgiving break. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 26.

Bellville ISD lists an early release on November 20 (district closes early at 12:00 p.m.), then student and staff holidays Monday, November 23 through Friday, November 27. Students return Monday, November 30.

Sealy ISD lists staff compensatory days with no school for students on November 23–24, then staff and student holidays November 25–27. Sealy’s published highlights do not mark November 20 as an early-dismissal day. The last student day before the break is still Friday, November 20. Students return Monday, November 30.

The unmodified SPO does not automatically hand either parent “Thanksgiving week.” It hands a defined window that starts on the dismissal day and ends on “the following Sunday.” If your family needs the whole week in one home, that has to be agreed in advance or written into the order.

How is Christmas 2026 split — and why does noon December 28 matter?

Christmas is not split on Christmas Day. Under the unmodified SPO, winter vacation is split at noon on December 28.

In even-numbered years like 2026, the possessory conservator typically has possession from 6:00 p.m. on the day the child is dismissed for Christmas vacation through noon on December 28. The managing conservator typically has noon on December 28 through 6:00 p.m. on the day before school resumes after that vacation. Odd years reverse those halves.

That noon December 28 exchange is one of the most commonly misread points in a Texas order. Parents plan around Christmas morning and forget that the decree already set a mid-break handoff. Mark noon on December 28 on both phones now.

What do the Bellville ISD and Sealy ISD winter calendars say for 2026–27?

Bellville ISD’s last student day before winter break is Friday, December 18, 2026, with early release at 12:00 p.m. Student and staff holidays run through the New Year window. January 4–5, 2027, are student holiday / professional learning days. Students return Wednesday, January 6, 2027, for the second semester.

Sealy ISD also has early dismissal on Friday, December 18, 2026. Staff and student holidays run December 21–31, with January 1, 2027, also listed as a holiday. January 4 is a teacher in-service day with no school for students. Students return Tuesday, January 5, 2027.

Those return dates are not the same. A Bellville child and a Sealy child can have different “day before school resumes” clocks. Siblings in two districts can have two different Christmas halves if the order uses each child’s enrolled school. County lines do not control the SPO. The child’s school does.

It is not always obvious whether a staff-only day counts as the day school “resumes.” Bellville’s January 4–5 professional learning days and Sealy’s January 4 teacher in-service sit right beside the student return. If your order uses school-resume language, clarify which day ends the second Christmas half before December gets busy.

What should we put on a practical holiday checklist this October?

✅ Before travel deposits and family invitations:

Pull the signed decree and find the Thanksgiving and Christmas paragraphs — not a memory of last year

Attach or print the official 2026–27 calendar for the campus where the child is actually enrolled (Bellville ISD or Sealy ISD)

Mark the last student day before Thanksgiving (November 20 for both districts) and note Bellville’s noon early release that day

Decide, in writing if needed, what “the following Sunday” means for your Thanksgiving end time

Mark Friday, December 18, 2026, as the Christmas dismissal day (early release in both districts)

Circle noon, Monday, December 28, 2026, as the Christmas split

Mark the day before each child’s school resumes — January 5 for a Bellville return on January 6; January 4 for a Sealy return on January 5 — and confirm how staff-only days are treated under your order

Confirm whether exchanges use 6:00 p.m. clock times or school dismissal / resume times

Put pickup location and who drives in one short written message both parents can keep

If siblings attend two districts, make a separate line for each child’s calendar

That list is planning. It is not a court filing. It is how October work prevents December conflict.

What if our order is customized, or we usually “just work it out”?

Many families in Bellville, Sealy, and Wallis have orders that change holiday start times, swap even/odd years, or give one parent a longer Christmas block because of travel. The unmodified SPO is only the default. The signed order controls.

Parents may also possess the child at mutually agreed times arranged in advance. A handshake in October can work. A text both people can find in December works better. Absent agreement, the terms in the decree apply. A different long-term holiday plan typically needs to be written into the order.

Fear of conflict is real. So is the cost of clarifying language. Clarifying before November is usually cheaper — in money and in stress — than an emergency fight the week of Thanksgiving. You do not have to litigate to put the calendar next to the order and ask one clear question.

FAQ

Is 2026 an even year for SPO holiday parity?

Yes. Under the unmodified SPO, 2026 (even) assigns Thanksgiving to the managing conservator, the first Christmas half (dismissal through noon December 28) to the possessory conservator, and the second Christmas half (noon December 28 through 6:00 p.m. the day before school resumes) to the managing conservator. Confirm those labels against your decree.

Do Bellville ISD and Sealy ISD share the same winter return date?

No. Bellville ISD students return Wednesday, January 6, 2027. Sealy ISD students return Tuesday, January 5, 2027. Use the enrolled child’s district calendar.

Does the holiday schedule cover “Thanksgiving week” automatically?

No. The unmodified Thanksgiving period runs from dismissal before Thanksgiving to 6:00 p.m. on the following Sunday. It does not automatically mean Monday through Sunday of the break week.

What if we already bought plane tickets for the wrong half of Christmas?

The signed order still controls unless the other parent agrees to a different plan or the order is changed. Raise the conflict early. Last-minute ticket pressure is a hard place to negotiate.
